Many years ago the Federal Government introduced legisilation that makes it compulsory for most employers to pay a 9%, in addition to your wage, into a registered superannuation fund.
The superannuation funds invests your money on your behalf so, with compound interest, your nest egg grows and has the potential to become sizeable.
You also have the option to contribute extra money to your superannuation fund.
How can I make extra contributions to my superannuation?
It's easy to add to your superannuation savings. All you need to do is talk to your employer or superannuation fund. If you are a low-income earner, you may also be entitled to a Superannuation Co-Contribution where the Federal Governments also makes a contribution to your superannuation savings.
How do I access my supperannuation?
You must reach retirement age, which is 60 for anyone born after July 1, 1964, before you can access your superannuation. even then, you cannot take it in one lump sum - it must be accessed as a stream of income.
There are special circumstances whereby you can access your non-preserved superannuation funds such as extreme financial hardship or being diagnoed with a terminal illness.
Can I set up my own superannuation fund?
